3% Check-off to End After This Week.
Committee formed to refund approximately
$65,000 in illegal dues withholding.
At a Columbus Day Beta Division Union meeting Monday, Executive Board President Mike DaVaney, announced that the paychecks distributed on October 16 would be the last one to withhold 3% check-off amount on Beta Division members and would then revert to the pre July, 2008 level of 2%.
DaVaney also said Beta Steel's payroll department has already provided the Union with the overpayment amounts per member. The primary tasks of the appointed committee will be to determine how the checks are delivered and whether they will constitute one payment or two. Presumably, they will also be responsible for making sure refund checks find their way to people who are no longer employed at Beta but are owed refunds.
The Beta Division Executive Board in August voted to reduce the check-off and refund the dues over-collection when it was pointed out in the June meeting, by concerned members, that the increase, which was included in contract negotiations with the company, was a violation of the Local's By-laws rules for increasing dues.
The Refund Committee members are:
Mike Battista - Melt Shop Electrical
Jim Munro III - Caster Slab Yard
Joe Drazic - Hot Strip Mechanical
Wayne Gerber - Safety
Darrel Fitch - Hot Strip Operations
When contacted on Tuesday Mike Battista said he was not aware he had been appointed to the committee, but, he had volunteered earlier so would be happy to serve. Jim Munro said he was told a couple of weeks ago that he is on the committee but has heard nothing since. The other members were unavailable for comment.
It was also decided by the ten members in attendance at Monday's meeting that next year's floating holiday would be on Columbus Day, October 11, 2010.
