SBN Confirms -
Division Executive Board votes to rescind 50% dues increase.

sIn the June Beta Steel Division meeting several members voiced concern about the legality and fairness of the 50% union check-off increase that was included in the contract of July 2008 by the negotiating committee headed by Mike DaVaney and Andre Joseph..

sThis increase made the Beta Division the only division paying 3% in Union Check-off fees while the rest of Local 2038 paid only 2%. Members stated that this appears to be in direct violation of our by-laws as well as the International Constitution.

s The elected officers of Beta Division took note of these members' concerns and acted. At the Beta Division Executive Board meeting on August 3, they voted 6 to 1 to rescind the 50% check-off increase. This change should be effective on the first paycheck of September.

s Officers voting to rescind the dues increase were Leo Vasquez, Darren Howerton, Brian Roths, Jeff Smith, Alan Nodd, and Reuben Medina. (Shop Steward Tom Overbey was absent due to shift work and 2nd Vice President Elizabeth Lackey is on sick leave.) Our thanks to these officers for taking prompt corrective action on this matter.

s Now the question is what are the Local 2038 Executive Board officers going to do about the reported 50 to 60 thousand dollars that we believe has been collected illegally and unfairly from the Beta Division members and is reportedly sitting untouched and un-disbursed in the Beta Division account?

We at SBN believe that is an easy question to answer.
Take a lesson from the Beta Division Officers and give it back to the membership it was taken from!

Sooner rather than later.
