Being the brother of the Webmaster of Steel, him being consequently the Most Famous Active Steelworker in the World Today, may seem like it would be a celebrated life to live. Well…it is. Not a thrill a minute, nor any real danger involved (except for the high speed boat chase down Deep River in the early seventies)…but people of no consequence approach me almost daily and ask, "…what the hell did he mean by that?". Of course there is no real answer to that question, usually not one that I can find anyway, but I do enjoy the attention.

The real dangers I have encountered in my life have been vocationally based, beginning with driving highway 249 in route to Bethlehem Steel for thirty three years. Then, "Ma Beth" took over as the purveyor of peril in my life, daily, so I purchased my first 29CFR 1910 OSHA General Industry Regulations manual and became…"Safety Dude". Fearless, paid instructor and guardian of irrefutable safety regulation, procedure, and law. Not a stature near the magnitude of "The Most Famous…anything", but non-the-less, an attention getter.

I performed as "Safety Dude" for fifteen years in two different divisions back east (east side of The Port of Indiana, that is). Creating safer conditions and saving lives daily was expected of me. This has since been something that I have hoped to continue to do here for my Brothers and Sisters at Local 2038. I am pleased, and honored to have been given the opportunity to express my ambitions, although unpaid this time, of assuring my fellow Ilasians' (I.L.A. shuns') safety. In addition to becoming aware that workers have rights to eliminate safety and health hazards, I also developed a few other interests that I really enjoy practicing and helping everyone understand. They include, but are not limited to; the Federal, and Indiana State Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Act statutes, which are enforced by some really understanding people and organizations, such as, the National Labor Relations Department, the N.L.R.B. Regional offices, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, and the Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Program.

I knew all along I would be afforded the opportunity to practice labor law without all of that boring campus life and the massive expenses (not to mention that menacing Bar exam), now, thanks to the Web Master of Steel's barely tapped generosity and talents, I'm back, and quite comfortable in this powerful seat on the staff of The Steel Barrel NewsLooking Down the Barrel.

Fraternally…L.T.
