View from the Bottom of the Barrel

My steel working experience all began in late 1969. At the tender age of 18 I was introduced to the world of steelmaking. I began as a laborer at Inland Steel in the #3 Open hearth.

After a few years I was working at the 44" Hot Strip and completed an electrical apprenticeship in 1975. Wow I was a Journeyman electrician. The thrill soon was gone as I was laid off and got reintroduced to the shovel and broom as a laborer.

After a cycle of layoffs for several years in the 1980's, I decided that maybe being an electrician wasn't enough. So I tested and transferred into the process automation department. I completed an instrumentation apprenticeship and became an Instrument and Control Technician.

During my tenure as an Instrument Technician I also served as a safety trainer, union safety steward and assistant griever. Finally after 30.5 years of dedicated service I retired from Inland Steel.

But now I'm baaaack!
