Democracy Inaction
As a less than willing participant in "Beer-Fest" (Lay-off) that has lasted for the longest time period in memory, I find my self with extra time on my hands. I therefore was able to attend the oft delayed union meeting on June 23, 2009. Well, I am shocked to say more fun and games ensued. The meeting started off with the typical evasive answers to old business and issues. Then the subject of the recent results of the mail in vote was raised. The results (53 for a change in the by-laws and only 4 against) seemed to be a clear mandate to enact the by-laws change. But Noooooo! Supposedly, not enough votes were returned to be valid. WOW, the rights of active participants are once again forfeit.
All members in good standing were given the opportunity to vote. Those who didn't vote were not objecting or making any statement. As always, they were just allowing the results to be determined by those who did vote.
Using the lack of participation as an excuse to invalidate the results is a shameful denial of rights to the people who took the time and effort to participate. Using the logic of our leaders the recent national elections should not stand because everyone who was eligible to vote did not. Never have I heard a more ludicrous reason for blocking change. This clearly cannot be allowed to stand; hopefully, needed change will come no matter how resistant some are to the inevitable.
Fraternally,
"Olde Skool"
